Never be afraid to tell them they're wrong, uplate. Especially if they seem determined to build scaffolding of diagnoses to the moon. Maybe you could tell them to back up a few steps and see where they went wrong. They only think they're God, after all.

And keep in mind that psychiatrists are trained as medical doctors, and not often as proper therapists and counsellors. When your primary tool is a hammer, you tend to see every problem as a nail. I think diagnosis is also required to have the treatment covered by health insurance. So don't put too much stock in the label.

If depression is your primary complaint, I think researchers have seen good results from mindfulness based cognitive therapy. There's a book called The Mindful Way Through Depression that's based in this approach, and includes a CD of meditations. People have also seen improvements in general health and pain from MBSR (Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction). Jon Kabat-Zinn talks about this approach extensively in his book titled Full Catastrophe Living.

It's worth a try.

I'm going to the GP tomorrow. I'm going to get him to take me off the SSRI (which seems to be the main problem) I don't know that it is depression that's the problem, more anxiety/irritability/paralysis.

I'll see if he can treat that with a mild mood stabilizer on its own (since that and the propranlol have been the only things that work without hammering me, and it works well for my son).

Oh, my son is home with me too. I'm not sure where I left off last time I was on the boards but he was unwell and no one could tell us why. He needed to be hospitalized but he's on the mend now and much more independent living here with me.
